Tank rcs radiological-chemical subsystem

RCS (Radiological-Chemical Subsystem) is intended to protect the tank and the crew against nuclear explosion and chemical agents (poisons), with following characteristics:

  • detection of impulse of nuclear explosion, through gamma and neutron radiation,
  • surveillance of contaminated area by measuring dosage of radioactive precipitations gamma radiation as well as induced radiation,
  • alarming the crew in case of exceeding certain level of absorbed doze in soft tissue in the contaminated area
  • measuring absorbed doze in soft tissue within the vehicle
  • detecting vapors of poisons in the atmosphere outside the vehicle and alarming the crew regarding their presence
  • transmitting alarming signals and activating protection executing mechanisms in case of nuclear attack (signal “A”); activating protection executing mechanisms in case of gamma radiation excess or presence of vapors of chemical warfare agents (poisons) (signals “R” and “O”); activating executing protection mechanisms in case of joint action of signals “A”, “R” and “O”

 

Operation principle

  • System detects chemical warfare agents (poisons) using ionization chamber, detection time is 4 to 5 seconds
  • System detects and measures radiological radiation by means of single sensor
  • System detects nuclear explosion by means of initial gamma and neutron waves and measures accumulated radiation dose caused by gamma and neutron waves 
  • Embedded automatic self-testing features, which are activated without operator’s interference. Malfunction of tested subsystems is displayed on central unit, with sound signal different than test signal
  • System measures air flow in the input area, sampled air area and exit area by electronic flow measuring devices in one-second cycles
  • Thermal stabilization of proportional type, providing fast and stable function with minimum temperature deviations 
  • Possibility of continuous contaminated area inspecting;  After chemical agent (poison) detection in the inspected area, system is automatically sampling clean air from the object for chemical unit recalibration,  and after 32 seconds system takes again a sample of the  air from inspected area; system is continuously inspecting air quality in 32 seconds cycles and  has non-limited contamination detections number capability.      
  • Hardware-software architecture, using processors, enabling software modifications in accordance with new requirements
  • System consists  of four elements
  • Low crew workload during operation: system only requires that the crew monitors  sound  signalization in headphones and visual (light)  signalization at LED-diodes and display 

 

RHP has automatic microprocessor testing, where operator controls the parameters through sound signals and visual signals with LED diode and display. In case of malfunction of any controlled parameter, alarm signal (which is different from test signal) will occur.
